Australian brandy has a serious pedigree. Thomas Hardy predicted in the 1880s that it could equal French cognac, and Black Bottle went on to win gold against Cognacs and European brandies at a Melbourne judging a century later. Today Black Bottle holds Gold at the Brandy Masters, USA Spirits Ratings and the New York International Spirits Competition, and 23rd Street's Not Your Nanna's Brandy has taken Double Gold at the SIP Awards.

Cognac is brandy, but only brandy made in the Cognac region of France under strict rules can use the name. Brandy simply means spirit distilled from wine, and it's made all over the world. Australian brandy is typically distilled from local wine grapes and matured in French and American oak — Black Bottle uses double pot distillation, the same traditional method used in Cognac.

Sip aged brandy like Black Bottle XO neat at room temperature in a tulip glass. Classic brandy is far more versatile: it's excellent over ice, essential in a Sidecar or Brandy Alexander, and a brandy with dry ginger ale is a genuinely classic Australian highball. The brandy liqueurs are after-dinner drinks — pour them neat or over ice cream.
