Real McCoy is American-distilled whiskey named for Bill McCoy, the Prohibition-era bootlegger who earned a legendary reputation by refusing to compromise — he sold only the finest liquor when the law said people could have none at all. That's where the phrase 'the real McCoy' comes from, and it's the standard the brand is built on.
