Frequently Asked Questions

What is ouzo?

Ouzo is the traditional Greek anise-flavoured spirit, distilled with aromatic seeds and botanicals and typically served as an aperitif alongside food. Sippify stocks 23rd Street Distillery's Matthew & Jim's Classic Ouzo at 37% and Olympus Ouzo at 37%, both in 700ml.

How do you drink ouzo?

Traditionally, over ice with a splash of cold water — which turns the spirit cloudy white, a phenomenon called louching that happens when the anise oils come out of solution. Sip it slowly rather than shooting it, and always with food. It's made for the taverna table: chargrilled seafood, saganaki, olives, feta and mezze.

What does 23rd Street ouzo taste like?

It's massively aromatic with sweet, clean fennel notes deepening into caraway and star anise. The palate is round and full with just enough sweetness, refreshing and assertive spice and herbal flavours, followed by a pleasantly lingering liquorice warmth. Whole star anise plus dill, caraway and fennel seeds are steeped in pure water for 24–48 hours before distillation.

Why is 23rd Street ouzo called Matthew & Jim's?

The ouzo is named after the grandfathers of 23rd Street's managing director, Angelo Kotses. The bottle features a photograph of the pair taken in Aetos, Florina, Greece on the day Angelo was born — each with a glass of ouzo in hand. It won Silver at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

Where can I buy ouzo online in Australia?
