Collection: RTD's and Beer

Beer is brewed from malted grain, hops, water and yeast, typically sitting between 3.5% and 10% ABV. An RTD (ready to drink) is a pre-mixed spirit-based drink — vodka, rum, bourbon, gin or tequila combined with a mixer and sealed in a can, bottle or cask. RTDs are usually gluten free where beer is not, and they cover a much wider flavour range.

It depends entirely on the product. A 375ml full-strength beer at 4.5% contains approximately 1.3 Australian standard drinks, similar to a 4% RTD at 1.2. But RTDs range far higher — an 8% can is around 2.4 standard drinks and a 12% can around 3.1, well above most beers. An Australian standard drink contains 10g of pure alcohol. Always check the label.

A mix usually works best. Beer suits longer sessions and barbecues, and cartons are economical. RTDs cover guests who don't drink beer, need gluten-free options, or prefer sweeter flavours, and they need no glassware. For larger groups, adding a 2L Vok cocktail cask covers a third group again, and Mocktails by Vok looks after non-drinkers.

Many are, because spirits distilled from sugarcane, agave or grapes contain no gluten grains. Several 23rd Street and Vickers RTDs carry an explicit gluten-free callout on their product page. Beer, by contrast, is brewed with malted grain and contains gluten. If you have coeliac disease, check the individual product page and confirm with the producer.
